2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Russell County finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Russell County finished sixth in Class 6A region two with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Warriors last playoff victory came during the 1998 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Russell County averaged scoring just 12.2 points a game. The Warriors would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 1-19 record. Since 2010, the Russell County football program has struggled with a record of 14-56. Over the past 25 seasons, Russell County has not won much with a record of 67-193. Their 26.0% winning percentage ranks 57th in Class 6A and 364th in the AHSAA. The Warriors have struggled on the football field with only three winning seasons during this time. Their last winning season was 1998. The Warriors are led by head coach Dwight Jones who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 22-40 over the past six seasons at Russell County. Under his direction the Warriors have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Jones. Coach Jones' overall record as a head football coach in seven season stands at 30-46 (39.5%). Over the course of his career, Coach Jones' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times . The Russell County Warriors will play in Class 6A region two during the 2017 season. This season, the Warriors will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region two. The Warriors open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Tallassee on Friday, August 25 at J.E. Hot Obrien Stadium. Last year the Tallassee Tigers finished with an overall record of 9-4 and in second place in Class 4A region three. The Tigers lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 4A playoffs to Andalusia by a score of 51-7. Russell County and Tallassee have met a total of 11 times on the football field. The Warriors have a 0-11-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2016 with Tallassee winning by a score of 25-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
